What makes the Orton-Gillingham approach unique and effective?

The Orton-Gillingham approach is unique in its effectiveness and flexibility.

It is an approach that is able to mold itself so that it can be most useful to the student and their particular strengths.

It utilizes multiple inputs in order to strengthen and support the students understanding and retrieval skills.

It also runs at the pace of the student so it is never too easy or too challenging, making it possible for the student to always grow.

The Core Tenants of the Approach

  • Multi-sensory

I utilize visual, kinesthetic, and auditory inputs in order to strengthen a students connection to graphemes and phonemes. This helps to improve their retrieval skills, making their reading and spelling processes more automatic.

  • Personalized

Each lesson is tailored to the students needs and strengths. I compile as much data as possible in order to leverage their skills to aid them in taking in and utilizing the information within and outside our lessons. This builds a students skill and confidence.

  • Scaffolded

All of the work is done in a specific sequence, based on the building blocks of the english language in order to boost automaticity and comprehension. By implementing an appropriate sequence, a student can immediately use skills learned.

“Dyslexia is a different brain organization that needs different teaching methods. It is never the fault of the child, but rather the responsibility of is who teach to find the methods that work for the child.”
